Deer Mountain, Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado

Clive Pates spent the summer of 2003 traveling throughout North America painting landscapes en plein air. He was invited by the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park, Colorado, to participate in the 2003 ‘Painting the Park’ Festival. In accordance with the rules of the event, this series of paintings from Deer Mountain was completed within a two week period at the end of August. Never a typical painter, Pates chose not to paint the famous mountain views surrounding him, but rather to concentrate on intimate scenes of a single tree and its surrounding bed of boulders.
